Steve began his career in broadcasting in
1978 as an engineer at TV station KAMR-TV, an NBC affiliate in
Amarillo, TX, and as an engineer and announcer at directional AM
KIXZ 940. Steve moved through TV and radio engineering jobs in
various markets, and in 1982 signed on as Chief Engineer at a
Tulsa AM/FM radio combo owned by a small company known as “Clear
Channel Broadcasting”, which at that time owned only 6 radio
stations and was privately held.
Steve’s first task was to install a new
4-tower AM array (DA-2) in Tulsa on 1300 kHz. Soon came docket
80-90, and the Arizona Waiver. This meant Clear Channel started
adding stations, and building/upgrading towers (and eventually
went public, in 1984). Steve oversaw the design and construction
of new multi-station tower sites at many of Clear Channel’s
markets, personally handling much of the installation on site, and
was promoted to Corporate Director of Engineering while still
retaining local Director of Engineering responsibilities.
In 1996 the Telecom deregulation act
passed, national ownership limits were eliminated, and 8
commonly-owned radio stations were permitted in many markets.
Steve was promoted to the corporate-only position of Vice
President, Engineering for Clear Channel Radio.
When Clear Channel, AMFM and Jacor merged,
Steve was named Senior Vice President, Technical and Capital
Management. In that role he developed a capital budgeting system
used throughout the enterprise, built an extensive in-house FCC
filing and regulatory compliance team and system, and oversaw the
creation of an Electronic Public File Audit System and team. Steve
has had various roles in the budgeting, design, and oversight of
over a hundred studio consolidation projects undertaken by Clear
Channel, as well as numerous RF projects. At the beginning of
2005, Steve Davis was named Senior Vice President of Engineering
for the combined Radio group. Steve has been with Clear Channel
since 1982.
Steve Davis is an SBE member and Certified
Senior Radio Engineer, serves on the NAB’s Program Committee,
the Media Security and Reliability Council, and the Federal
Communications Commission's Independent Panel Reviewing the Impact
of Hurricane Katrina on Communications Networks. Steve is married
to wife Melinda and is the father of two.
