Case
Study: New Orleans' Blended Public/Private Metro Scale Wireless
Network -
The speaker will
present New Orleans’ and other cities’ state-of-the-art
approaches to deploying and expanding metro scale wireless mesh
networks. Various business models have emerged as these networks
have been rolled out and continue to evolve. These range from
the pure commercial models, to providing free public access, to
ad-supported models and others. New Orleans has developed a
blended strategy: a carrier operates the public commercial
network, and the city operates an independent wireless network
for municipal applications including video surveillance, safety
and permits, and inspections. The speaker will discuss the
effectiveness of this blended strategy, and how well these
networks are operating. He will also discuss the City’s
successful use of 4.9GHz frequencies, and plans for EarthLink
and the City to potentially let city services ride on the
EarthLink network as “anchor tenants.”
